natureofmercury is derived from the phrase 'of a mercurial nature', interpreted as the ability to be open-minded and malleable.
It is simultaneously a fashion brand and an enablement to my way of thinking.
This began as a graduate collection in 2022 entitled 'The Nature of Mercury'. It covered the idea of masking in queerness, explored tangibly through researching survival instincts in the animal & human kingdoms, i.e; camouflage/reflection, distortion, self-enlargement, mimicry.
After I had settled in Meeanjin, Australia, natureofmercury truly began in April of 2024, with the AsWeWatchTheWorldGoBy show. Held in Dunedin, this was a showcase of 30 local designers within Aotearoa.
The collection 'LONGLINE' aimed to highlight craftsmanship, emphasising the importance of quality in luxury.
In the second half of 2024, Practice Studio and Elsurgio Duarte hosted the PS Independent Designer Runway. This was an opportunity for 15 local creatives to showcase 2 looks each.
At the beginning of 2025 I began collaborating on a 29-look collection with Emma Muir of Rhoda Nunn. We explored the role of the maker influencing design, which resulted in a range of garments that were pragmatically beautfiul.
'Mark of the Maker' was shown in Auckland in March 2025, with thanks to the Āhua team.
In September of 2025, Ayla Anderson of Also Known As and I released a collaborative garment; the Staple Shirt. A mashup of our two respective best-sellers, a versatile staple piece.
